Organización fundada en Nueva York en 1920 por Roger Baldwin y otras personas para promover las libertades constitucionales en EE.UU. Se ocupa de tres aspectos fundamentales: las libertades de expresión, de conciencia y de asociación; el
debido proceso, y la
igualdad ante la ley.
Desde su creación ha intervenido en cuestiones no resueltas o casos que se ventilan actualmente en los tribunales. Puede prestar asesoramiento legal, o presentar escritos en calidad de
amicus curiae. Una de las causas emblemáticas en que intervino fue el juicio Scope; brindó asesoramiento letrado en el caso
Sacco y Vanzetti. En las décadas de 1950 y 1960 se opuso a las listas negras de presuntos subversivos de izquierda y se esforzó por garantizar la libertad de culto y los derechos del inculpado.
